SixApart, WordPress and 37Signals Support OpenID; Why Not 1&1 and GoDaddy?

Wed, 07 Mar 2007 12:09:00 -0400

I've been reading a lot about OpenID, a free, decentralized framework for managing digital identities. You start with an URI (think of it as a master username) and store your password and other creditials with an OpenID provider. You can then log into any OpenID enabled service with your URI. The service will fetch whatever credentials it needs from your identity provider.

Simon Willison wrote a great post on cool things you can do with OpenID. My favorite is restricted single sign on. Simon suggested that if everyone in an organization had "username.internal.example.org" OpenIDs, all internal apps behind the firewall could be configured to grant automatic access to such users. This eliminates the hassle of creating/deleting accounts on each service for incoming/departing employees. Couldn't GoDaddy use a similar method to apply the same logins across its many services?

I'm also intrigued by Kai Hendry's comment that maybe OpenID can be used for brokering payments. This would allow access pass holders to view content, download songs, etc across multiple sites. Not that this technology isn't already available, but OpenID would save subscribers from having to keep track of different logins for different networks.

Anyway, Microsoft announced last month that it would make Windows Cardspace interoperable with OpenID. A couple of weeks later, AOL announced its support as well. SixApart is in (in fact, OpenID creator Brad Fitzpatrick also developed LiveJournal, and is SixApart's chief architect). And Digg. And ImageShack, WordPress, Technorati, SmugMug, 37Signals...

Recently I signed up for isabel.wang.name as my OpenID through FreeYourID (which I read about on TechCrunch). If nothing else, they managed to sell me a .name domain. My question is, why isn't 1&1 in this market as well?

Use Gmail, says DreamHost

Tue, 27 May 2008 00:00:00 +0000
Web hosting provider DreamHost has recently given its customers the rather unusual advice of choosing Google's Gmail over its own email service, telling them that "it's something Google...can do better."

To answer all these questions, we recommend that you check out web host reviews, user feedback and tests sites already running with the company you have in mind (important for checking speed).

We worked hard to come upon this respectable composition on quality web hosting. Don't let these efforts go to vain; use it wisely.

Professional Web Hosting and eCommerce

Professional web hosting and eCommerce offers are constantly increasing. It’s directly the result of one of the fastest growing sectors of the Internet that is eCommerce.

Dialpoint Stock Soars after Two Key Hosting - Telecom Acquisitions

Mon, 04 Feb 2008 19:47:00 -0400

I noticed that Dialpoint Communications Corp (OTCBB: DLPC) completed two acquisitions in January;

The first: Acquisition of Hostigation (Timothy Flavin), an asset transaction where the owners accepted 333,334 shares of Dialpoint stock. This stock has already increased 5 to 20 times (depending how you interpret the agreements) since the deal was inked.

The second: Acquisition of Brian's Computer Center, the press release stated “…the Company will issue unregistered shares of its common stock equal in the amount of 107,843 shares. The certificates representing the shares of common stock will bear restrictive legends.”

Dialpoint has a market cap of $38.6 million.

Am I impressed? Peeling back the onion...

  • Dialpoint has 13.3 million shares outstanding - thats a lot.
  • The Hostingation deal has a value of $50,000 at closing...a tiny deal
  • The Brian’s Computer deal value looks like it was $170,000...another tiny deal.
  • The stock increased from $0.51 on 1-17-08 to $2.90 today...thats a big gain.
  • Dialpoint President Billy Radford ownes 11.25 million shares...Can you say $32.6 million?
  • Over the last two weeks an average of 3,000 shares/day were traded...why bother.

If this was a deal put before one of my clients I would highly suggest we conduct extensive due-diligence prior to accepting a deal like this.

In these deals there is NO cash. The sellers probably cannot be liquid for at least 12 months, and with the current float it would be extreamly hard to sell the shares.

If you are selling your business I would tell you only to take stock as a small percentage from firms that are similiar to Dialpoint. The stock should be the upside - not the whole banana.

Other than the press releases and a couple of SEC docs I could find out almost nothing about Dialpoint. I will however admit they have been very successful in getting thousands of these two press releases pasted all over the Internet.

The two hosts certainly have similarities. Kyle J. Summers looks at what sets HostGator and HostICan apart: plans, bandwidth, support, and even money back guarantees.

How to Migrate Your Linux Website to Another Hosting Company

Wed, 07 May 2008 12:48:34 GMT
A complete migration involves transferring the site data itself, meaning all the HTML and possibly PHP and MySQL files and CGI programs. You also need to modify the Domain Name System (DNS) information for the site and for the routing of the site email. DNS holds information that translates IP addresses to human-readable domain names. For Web site migration, the two important DNS records are the address (A) record, which tells the browser the IP address of the Web server, and the mail exchange (MX) record, which tells mail servers how to route the email.

I doubt that I will ever get around to building my own datacenter, but if I do, it will not be close to a highway. Yep, the security implications that this event brings to the surface are disturbing.

Today`s suggestion:

I have been a dreamhost client for 4 years now and I agree with the reviews
under me about their service entering dangerous waters as of late. No doubt that
their plans are some of the best (and very affordable for those who want quality
but are a little stingy in their spending) to be found, along with their '97
dollars for every refferal' program.

I have been reading on their site about numerous server upgrades and outages
too, but they seem to be getting back on their feet (although it seems that
every sever outage has been on a server that I am not hosted on...) and I won't
be suprised if they explode with popularity due to their kind and personal
staff, as well as their upbeat employee-owned company ideals.

I highly reccommend them for a personal site, however if you are a company who
can't afford one second of downtime, I suggest waiting a few months untill they
are done upgrading their servers.

All in all, I'll never leave dreamhost.

A Tale of Three Companies

After receiving the message I was able to set up my

sites under the newly assigned IP addresses and the

sites that were down for like 18 hours were online

and functioning properly within minutes.

http://www.rioserver.com/comunidad

Today`s suggestion:

I needed to change my web hosting service. I also have several clients that will
need web hosting services in the near future. I made the decision to research
the ideal company for my needs and my clients needs. Using the Internet I
checked on many web hosting services, looking closely at the ratings by current
and former users. My investigation led me to LunarPages.com.

All of my research showed that LunarPages.com offered the options that I needed
at an affordable price. Everyone, including the LunarPages website, said that
they offered exceptional service and support. I made my decision and began the
task of setting up my new LunarPages hosting service with the options that I
needed. I also began transferring my current business website and two
recreational websites over to the new service. Because I didn't plan it better,
I made some mistakes that caused problems with my service. Frustrated, I began
communicating with the LunarPages support staff via their support ticket email
service. What I found was surprising.

Not only did the LunarPages staff offer fast response time, but they truly knew
what they were doing and could assist me in solving my problems. The problems
weren't easy, and my lack of experience in using a web hosting service didn't
help things, but the LunarPages staff worked through it and within a short
period of time they had everything running smoothly. They were also able to
direct me to several well written white papers that detailed the tasks I was
working with. Those papers were written in simple, easy to understand language,
and yet contained all of the information that I needed to get the job done. In
short, LunarPages.com and its staff have made a believer out of me. I have over
25 years of experience working in the micro computer industry. I have dealt with
many different companies, trying to solve many different problems.
LunarPages.com rates at the top of my list for a satisfying experience.

website.

Improvement is something we aim to do in our next article on website hosting review. We intend to provide an improved article on website hosting review in the near future.
